A southbound express to Auckland hauled by an A Class locomotive passes an Ab Class locomotive parked outside the engine shed at Maungaturoto, ca late 1920s. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber.

A photograph taken from a similar view point can be found on page 9 of `New Zealand Railway Memories,' compiled by Geoffrey Churchman from the J D Mahony Collection, IPL Books, Wellington, 1999.
The line through to Whangarei was opened 29 November 1925 so the photograph cannot have been taken before that date. Also Ab and A class locomotives are sporting cast smokebox doors in this photograph. These were replace by pressed steel doors later during overhauls.
