Description: A southbound express to Auckland hauled by an A Class locomotive passes an Ab Class locomotive parked outside the engine shed at Maungaturoto, ca late 1920s. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber. Library client provided identification of locomotives, location, date, and supporting information, September 2010. A photograph taken from a similar view point can be found on page 9 of `New Zealand Railway Memories,' compiled by Geoffrey Churchman from the J D Mahony Collection, IPL Books, Wellington, 1999. The line through to Whangarei was opened 29 November 1925 so the photograph cannot have been taken before that date. Also Ab and A class locomotives are sporting cast smokebox doors in this photograph. These were replace by pressed steel doors later during overhauls. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).
