Description: 19 letters written by John Massey from Maungaturoto to his family in England. Accompanying the letters are transcriptions and notes written by two of his great grandchildren Meg Sutton and Richard Maxfield Massey. The notes identify family members and connections between them, including Bestwicks and whether or not they are related to John Massey's wife Sarah Ellen Massey (nee Bestwick). One partial letter describes arriving in Auckland from England [1863]. The following letters are dated 1872 and then 1882-1890. They are addressed to various family members who are living at Grantham, Hopedale and Alstonefield. Letters discuss decision to settle in Northland, surveying and purchasing of land through the Homestead Act, hunting, bush clearing, building of house, and farming of crops and livestock. Includes mention of sheep dipping, possibility of a farmers co-operative, railroad, and prices fetched for wool, meat, and dairy. Also talks about family illnesses, deaths, and marriages. Gives news about his four sons and describes a party held for his 71st birthday. Massey asks for news of family and friends in England and writes that he will send stamps and money orders in order that his family can write back to him. Often includes religious quotes. Included with the letters is a sketch of Hope Farm at Maungaturoto where many of the letters were written from. The pencil sketch shows a farmhouse and other buildings, fenced paddocks, and trees. It is undated and the artist is unknown. Also includes one letter from John's cousin Harriett Bestwick to John's sister Rebecca, [ca 1885] and part of one letter from one of John's sons, dated 1895. Oldham, Alfred, 1831-1919 : Recollections

Description: The recollections contain an account of Oldham's experiences as a farmer, flax manufacturer and lay preacher. Includes an editorial note by the donor who retyped the recollections from an earlier typescript. Oldham was born and grew up in Nottingham. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1859 and initially farmed at Mangawai, Maungatroto and Paparoa in Northland. A Methodist lay preacher, he conducted services in this district before an official Methodist circuit was established. He became involved in the manufacture of flax matting and in ca 1880 moved to Tuakau in Waikato where he ran a flax factory for about 18 years before retiring to Auckland. He also served as a lay preacher on the Pukekohe and Auckland Methodist circuits. Quantity: 1 folder(s). 0.01 Linear Metres.
