Description

Covers his childhood in Napier, including memories of Te Kooti and William Colenso; employment as a horse-driver; work on Greenmeadows Fruit Farm; coachdriver at Manaia, then in Dannevirke; service with 4th Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade on Western Front and convalescence at Brockenhurst and Hornchurch Hospitals in England.

Mention of James Ellis' escape following his murder of Leonard Collinson, and capture by police. He was tried and executed in Feb 1905

Smith had a varied career as a farm-worker, driver and shepherd in the Hawkes Bay region and served in France, during the First World War and was wounded. He retired to Wanganui as an engineer.
