Description

Shows a two-storeyed house and a row of thatched dwellings along a stretch of shoreline, with a French flag flying from the tower of a European building which dominates the view. A canoe is drawn up on the shore at the left and there are two jetties or diving platforms further along the shore.

The imposing building is probably the administration building (see photographs by Viaud in 1850s - NZ&P q919.6211 VIA, where a building resembling this in its tower, is described as "le batiment de manutention" - facade in 1859 is slightly different).
