Description: Embroidered "envelope" inset, into which one could insert a small note on paper. The flap of the "envelope" is decorated with fuchsias and oval "flags" of Germany, France, Italy and Britain. The words "I'm thinking of you" are embroidered below. The verso of the card bears a message from Boy to Dear Old Bessie, dated 12 March 1917 at the war front in France. Also includes a small card with the words "Forget me not", with a small image of a woman surrounded by flags of various nations including France, Germany and Japan. "Boy" Bennett was probably a neighbour of the donor's mother, Elizabeth (Bess) Feeney, nee Sherlock, when she lived in Westport as a child. Other Titles - 12 March 1917 Quantity: 1 embroidered panel. Description: A French barracks on a hill between Papeete and Point Venus. The ship Harpley can be seen anchored off shore. Natives fishing in outrigger canoes, one man pulling his canoe ashore. A European man rides along the shore on horseback. The artist has added in pencil: 'The natives charged up the steep hill' and marked the spot with an X. Description: A view of the top point of Tahiti-nui, called Point Venus, at the tip of Matavai Bay. The artist has added 'Where Capt. Cook landed in 1768 [1769]. Ship Harpley.' It shows a French fort and soldiers. One of the soldiers stands with the man identified as the Captain. A large stone left by Cook is also seen. A more modern memorial was erected by the French in 1901. Page not numbered as the rest are, and dated as one year later - this is likely to be an error. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
