Dunedin solicitor Henry Howorth, was William Mathew Hodgkins' partner in Dunedin. He may have been related to Charles Henry Howorth, although he was not his father. Charles Henry Howorth was the son of another Dunedin lawyer, George Howorth. The painting may have come into W. M. Hodgkins' collection because of this connection, or because of Hodgkins' wide involvement with Dunedin art circles. The scene is presumably of a Dunedin beach
