Dunedin solicitor and artist. Born Liverpool, educated partly at Staveley School, Derbyshire. Became a clerk. Arrived in Melbourne in January 1860, and in Dunedin in 1861 as a solicitor's clerk. Married Rachel Owens Parker in 1865 and was father of artists Frances Hodgkins and Isabel Field. Also father of William, Percy, Gilbert and Frank Hodgkins. See DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p. 223.
