New Zealand artist and engineer. Born in Dunedin, the son of lawyer George Howorth and Sarah Mottram. Chief Engineer for Southland County from about 1880 to 1906, and co-founder of the Invercargill Art Society in 1893. He built a large brick house, 'Wharepaka' at 51 Herbert Street, in central Invercargill, 1902. Painted many views of Otago, Southland and Fiordland in this period. He left Invercargill in 1906 and travelled round the North Island, visiting and painting the Thermal Region ca 1908. He moved to Wanganui about 1912. Exhibited at Otago Art Society, Invercargill Art Society, Christchurch Society of Arts, New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts 1883-1925, Wanganui Arts and Crafts Society, and the St Louis Exposition, U. S. A. in 1904.

It was built in 1902. He lived in the house for approximately 4 years, leaving Invercargill in 1906, the year before this work was painted.
