Description

Two Raiatean women and two men dancing in a courtyard in front of a building. Musicians are performing on various drums, and with hand-clapping behind them. They are watched on both sides by a crowd of Tahitians, with a few European sailors amongst them. The two male dancers are squatting, while the two women are standing, wearing fanned out tapa skirts, coconut shells over their breasts and hats.

Published in Anderson, G. W. A new, authentic and complete collection of voyages. [London, Another edition, ca 1791 or 2]. In the 1st edition this plate is engraved by Hawkins. Derived from an engraving by Sherwin after Webber on Cook's 3rd voyage in Cook, J. A voyage to the Pacific Ocean. London, 1784, Pl 28.
