Description

Group of Maori men wearing korowai (tag cloak) and piupiu, and carrying taiaha and tewhatewha, standing in front of the Moutoa Flag which measures 8 x 5.5 feet and is made of heavy quality white silk with a Union Jack oversown on the upper left corner. Photograph taken ca 1900 by W H Partington of Wanganui.

"...a banner known as the Moutoa Flag, was worked by the ladies of the [Wanganui] district and presented to the loyal Maoris. It was the inspiration of Mrs Logan, wife of Lt. Col. Logan, officer commanding the Imperial Forces stationed in Wanganui, that some practical expression of their gratitude the ladies of the district be made to the loyal Whanganui chief to honour their victory against the Hauhaus at Moutoa Island.
