Description: Depicts the ceremony of choosing the first National flag of New Zealand by the Maori chiefs from one of three designs, witnessed by a grathering of missionaries, settlers, commanders of 10 British and 3 American ships. The ceremony took place at the house of the British Resident, Mr James Busby at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands on the 20th March 1834 with a salute of 21 guns from HMS Alligator (in distance). The flag that was chosen is being pointed at by a chief holding up a greenstone mere. The design chosen was the red cross of St George on a white background and a small red St George's cross in the top left hand corner on a blue background. In each of these quarters is an 8 pointed star. An enlargement of the flag is in the bottom lefthand corner of the postcard. The flag was called the Flag of United Tribes of New Zealand (1834-1840) The flag was adopted by Shaw Savill & Company as its house flag in 1858 it having ceased to be the national flag when New Zealand came under the British sovereignty Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Description: Slides of images collected by Judith Binney relating to her research on Rua Kenana Hepetipa. Some photographs taken in 1981. Others taken circa 1981. Photographer unidentified, possibly Binney. Six images show a red flag labelled with the words 'Rua Tupua'. Four show wooden carvings representing Tangata Iti and Paikea (with tuku tuku panels and photographs alongside) inside the house Toi kai rakau at Waikirikiri marae in Ruatoki. Further images comprise one of a wooden carved statue in Rotora showing a figure holding a lizard, and one looking towards a small house in a rural area. Binney has identified this last image as 'Rua. Whare Karakia. Te Teko'. Battle" and "V Aftermath" and some loose papers, comprising research notes, photocopies, newspaper clippings and correspondence relating to Anderson's research into the 1864 Battle of Moutoa and the Moutoa flag. Two clean copies and one copy with annotations (by Anderson?) of the 'Battle of Moutoa Island, May 14 1864' booklet published by the Moutoa Centennial Committee in 1964. Accompanying this booklet is manuscript of a Māori "chant sung by Pehi Turoa, when he came down river in canoe pleading with people to let him land; and was abused and pelted with refuse". Also includes two photographs (numbered 19 and 20) by an unidentified photographer taken at Moutoa Gardens on 17 May 1964. Title supplied by Library. Description: Across the top of the picture, a plan view of the trenches in two sections of Gate Pa, with trench to swamp and water on both sides, breach in palisade, connecting trench and outer palisade shown. Across the centre 'Front view 28 April - that night I crossed at low water to rear of Gate. Mission land', showing a long palisade with a flag flying above it. Below are three drawings. On the left, a cross-section of the interior of the pa, showing several Maori men inside dug-out trenches, marked 'covered way', 'centre shelter', 'rear' (with flag flying beyond).
