Description

Shows a group of Maori schoolboys seated around a desk in a classroom, with a teacher in top hat standing in the doorway behind. In front of the group on the floor are another top hat and two wide-brimmed straw hats, the latter presumably belonging to the schoolboys. The Jubilee refers to the 1849 50th jubilee of the Church Missionary Society.

Loosely based on the Church Missionary Gleaner for 1850 / 1851 (published London, 1852). On p. 145 there is a wood engraving 'New Zealand chiefs drawing up a reply to the Society's jubilee letter' showing the Rev. Richard Taylor in the background, the chiefs in European dress and the incident in question dating from 24th December 1849. The chiefs have been converted in the lantern slide version into schoolboys

Dating: the firm W E & F Newton was based at 3 Fleet Street (the address printed on the wooden frame) between 1852 and 1857
