Description: Copy of a topographic map of the area in the Murimotu District from the Kaiiwi River and the Ohura River across to Lake Taupo, the Kaimanawa Ranges and the Rangitikei River. Cut road lines, proposed lines and native tracks are referred to in a reference key. Some tracks are routes proposed by Mr. Hogg and Mr. Booth, also an old war track described by natives is marked. Plantations, mountain peaks, rivers and streams are named. Relief features are described. Major Marshall's and Birch's Station are marked. Handwritten note on bottom right of map: The lake and mountains are from Hochstetter's map corrected by the Auckland Trig Survey: the Wanganui River from Brewer's survey, and the Upper Turakina and Rangitikei from Swainson's map corrected by Monro's survey. Description: The diary commences on 24 March 1884 when Pemberton left Wanganui with equipment supplied by the Wanganui Gold Prospecting Company and two months provisions to prospect for gold on the upper Whanganui River and in the Tuhua country, northwest of Taumarunui. Pemberton describes the vicissitudes he experienced on his journey up the river and the difficulties he faced in attempting to obtain permission from Tuhua Maori to prospect in their territory. Pemberton failed to find any evidence of gold during his expedition and returned down river to Wanganui, arriving on 21 May. This portion of the diary ends on 27 May when he was still in Wanganui. The second part of the diary covers the period 7 Aug 1885-18 May 1885 and the entries are briefer than those describing his gold prospecting expedition. The entries outline his activities in the Manawatu-Wanganui region undertaking surveying work for various clients. Also a typed transcript of the diary. Description: Sketch map of the electorate of Wanganui, the area, including the boundaries, is identified by a pink wash and contains grid lines within its boundaries. Its location is shown in context to the Wanganui River and to where the river exits to the sea. Drawn on the top and left side of the area coloured pink, are black lines and numbers (7 to 9,11 and 12 to 19) denoting land blocks of the Westmere Survey District and the Roman numerals V and III. The name Waitotara is written in pink wash along the right side of the map. The Waitotara Electorate surrounds the Wanganui Electorate. The number 4640 is written in pink wash across the area indentifed as the electorate of Wanganui. This figure is the electorate's population at April 1881, required for the 1881 electoral redistribution. Description: Photographs relating to the Wanganui District The first photograph is of a group of 15 men some holding mere and one holding a taiaha and wearing improvised flax skirts with their trousers rolled up, probably a haka group. The second is of eight women and a man sitting or standing near a coffin covered in blankets and kakahu. The women are wearing wreaths made of leaves. The coffin is on the verandah of a house and on the wall behind it is a display of portraits of ancestors each with a fringed cloth over the top edge. The third is of 19 women, one holding a baby, a girl and five men, one in a uniform. The women have thick coats and shawls on and two of the women seated at the front are also wearing wreaths made of leaves. These two are giving a hongi. Although the location is descibed as Wanganui District on the deposit form each photograph also has the name Kaitarakihi stamped on it. Photographer unidentified. Description: Journal kept by Hunter while travelling from England to New Zealand on the `Rangitata' and his return to England on the `Makura' to Australia and the Orsova' from Sydney from 23 Oct 1931 to 26 Apr 1932. He travelled with Ena Hunter. He describes their preparations, embarkation at Southampton, the other passengers, food (including menus), sea sickness, entertainments, the comforts and otherwise of the ship, his cabin, their passage through the Panama Canal and Armstice Day. They disembarked at Wellington 24 Nov 1931, and left for Australia on the `Makura' 7 Mar 1932, and for England on the `Orsova' from Sydney, 13 Mar 1932. In New Zealand Hunter spent time in Wellington, visiting the Alexander Turnbull Library, describing the work of the League of Nations Union in Wellington, visits Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson where he spent some time, Wanganui, the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Auckland and back through Taranaki where he climbed Mt Egmont; he visited farms and factories, observed the opening of Parliament (24 Feb 1932) and visited the Gear Freezing and Meat Preservation Company. He attended many church services in various churches including the Congregational, Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. Folowing his and Ena's departure for Sydney he describes the new Sydney harbour bridge, their visit to Tasmania and the House of Commons in Hobart, visiting to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Colombo, the Suez Canal, Naples and Gibraltar, and an ANZAC commemoration service he declined to attend. The journal is illustrated and includes a water colour of the `Rangitata', newspaper clippings of portraits of various New Zealanders; and a copy of a letter from the Turnbull to the donor (1986).
