Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Description: Comprises complete set of the company's printed annual reports detailing its construction and operating activities. Includes handwritten note of important dates at front, newspaper clippings, notices of meetings, prospectuses, maps and a copy of the Act effecting the purchase of the company. Source of title - Cover title Company founded in Jan 1881 by Wellington Chamber of Commerce to enable work to re-commence on the Wellington-Johnsonville railway line, begun by government in 1879 but stopped in 1880. The line was completed as far as Longburn, near Palmerston North, and officially opened on 1 Dec 1886. The government exercised its option and nationalised the line, buying the company's assets for £900,000, in 1908. Quantity: 1 volume(s). 0.06 Linear Metres. Description: Hand-drawn map of the area from Taumarunui following the main trunk line and the Ongarue River northwards to Mangeokewa River to the Waikato River and Waihaha River to Waituhi. Creeks, streams and rivers are named, some marked in blue. Watersheds of the Mokau, Wanganui and Waikato Rivers are prominently marked as are land blocks and mountain peaks which include height in feet. Lines of the Taringamotu Company's Tram and the Mangapehe Tram are drawn and the map includes many references to tram formations. Directions with mileages are given to Lake Taupo.
