Description: Shows missionary settlement at Rangihoua, Bay of Islands. After an almost identical image (which however has 2 larger sailing ships in the foreground) "Church missionary settlement at Rangihoua, N.Z.", published in Church Missionary Quarterly Papers, midsummer 1832, no. 66, cover page; and, "[Missionary settlement at Rangihoua on the North side of the Bay of Islands c.1830]", an oil painting in the Rex Nan Kivell collection. This latter also features two vessels in foreground sea. Description: Shows a group of Maori schoolboys seated around a desk in a classroom, with a teacher in top hat standing in the doorway behind. In front of the group on the floor are another top hat and two wide-brimmed straw hats, the latter presumably belonging to the schoolboys. The Jubilee refers to the 1849 50th jubilee of the Church Missionary Society. Loosely based on the Church Missionary Gleaner for 1850 / 1851 (published London, 1852). On p. 145 there is a wood engraving 'New Zealand chiefs drawing up a reply to the Society's jubilee letter' showing the Rev. Richard Taylor in the background, the chiefs in European dress and the incident in question dating from 24th December 1849.
