Description

Album of photographs compiled by George Gordon Denniston illustrating a soldier's experience of the Gallipoli campaignaand military life in France, September 1915 to June 1918. Photographer(s) unidentified.

Album opens with a view of Cathedral Rock, Gallipoli, and follows with other views of the landscape, the trenches, dugouts, troops, life on site, and other activities relating to the campaign. There are pictures of the dead and wounded, and of men and mules bringing water to the trenches.

There are also sections on Lemnos, the Greek Island some way off Gallipoli. It functioned as a back-up base during the campaign. Soldiers were landed there prior to going to the front. Hospitals and other services were located there, and Moudhros (Mudros) Harbour provided shelter for scores of warships. The album has views of the countryside and the chief town, Kastron, as well as camps, camp life and warships.

The photographs record the departure from Gallipoli via Lemnos for Egypt and Alexandria on board the SS Hororata. There are views of Alexandria Harbour followed by others of Cairo Zoo. Then its Zeitoun military training camp on the outskirts of Caio where the troops were requipped and retrained for the Western Front and the defence of Egypt. Denniston took part in guarding the Suez Canal against Turkish attack before going to France as there is a view of the camp at Serapeum, a town on the canal just north of the Great Bitter Lake.

The second half of the album records experiences in France. There are photos of soldiers, horses, regimental groups and the houses and French families they were billeted with. There are no scenes of the site of battle as there are among the Gallipoli photos.

The album ends with the return voyage home via the Panama Canal on the USS Tahiti (H.M.N.Z.T. 97) in June 1918.
