Mail and passenger vessel of 7585 grt. Owned by Elder Dempster from 1904 to 1911 as the `Port Kingston'. Bought by the Union Steam Ship Company in 1911, who renamed her the `Tahiti' and placed her on the Trans-Pacific service. Served as a transport ship during World War I (as HMNZT No 4, Oct 1914; No 18, Feb 1915; No 25, June 1915). She sank in the mid-Pacific when the propeller shaft fractured off and pierced the hull, on 18 August 1930. See Ships with New Zealand Associations (Vol 8, p 79)

Description: Contains original letters and diary of Henry Kitson from WW1. The letters and diary both include accounts of the sea voyage from New Zealand and mililitary duties and conditions, the Gallipoli landing of April 1915 and subsequent fighting and his experiences of his recuperation in military hospitals. Also includes annotated original photographic prints, and postcards relating to WW1, and a spiral bound book of the letters and diary transcribed and edited by Helen, daughter in law of Henry in 1992. This spiral bound book is probably the same as MS-Papers-4540. Henry Kitson left New Zealand in February 1915 aboard the Tahiti, he saw action in the Gallipolli Campaign with the 1st Canterbury Regiment before being injured in June 1915 and transported, first to Floriana Hospital in Malta, then to various military hospitals in England including Woodcote Camp in Epsom, Hyde Park Hospital in Plymouth and Walton on Thames. He was discharged from hospital in February 1917 and joined the 37th Reinforcement in 1918, he served as a Warrant Officer at the battles of Bapaume, Biefrillers, Cambrai and Le Quesnoy. Description: Photographs relating to New Zealand soldiers during the first World War. The first section shows men embarking on the troopship Willochra, horses being transported on the troopship Tahiti; and shipboard life. The next scenes are in Colombo, with barges bringing coal to the ship; and arrival in Bombay with workmen hauling the ship into dock and unloading horses. Three images show German biplanes abandoned, and some scrapped in the area of Mauberge [i.e. Maubeuge]; then AA guns abandoned by the Germans at Keumiee. Several views of bridges over the Rhine, including a group of three New Zealand soldiers on horseback crossing one of the bridges; also several scenes of bridges in Bonn, some showing two NZ soldiers. Other places include snapshots of Cologne and Refrath. Several photographs at the end of the album show NZ soldiers including "a party of visitors"; four men identified as Thornton, George, Rae, and Angus; and a group of 8 men outside a buidling "Christmas in Germany". Description: A scrapbook album compiled by Colin Feslier relating to Sidney James Anton. Comprises mainly materials created circa 1918 to circa 1920s which belonged to Anton. First section of the album contains print-outs made by Feslier of online publications and an email relating to Feslier's research into the influenza outbreak on the World War One troop ship HMNZT 'Tahiti' and Feslier's transcription of Anton's Soldiers diary. Second section of the album contains a selection of personal papers which belonged to Sidney James Anton, including papers which he created and that which he accumulated in relation to his war service: handwritten notes, business and visiting cards (some annotated with personal messages to Anton), printed ephemera, newspaper clippings, forms, and certificates. Items of note include: an order for postcards on a business card for "Reginald Haines artist in photography", London; a programme for "New Zealand v South Africa" 28 January 1919; railway warrants for Anton's service leave in the United Kingdom dated March 1919; a New Zealand Expedionary Force pass for Anton dated 16 July 1919; a dance card "Given by New Zealanders resident in Durban to the New Zealand Military Rugby Team 25th August 1919" which is annotated "S J Anton, NZFA"; Leave on discharge certificate dated September 1919; NZR Returned soldiers railway ticket dated October - November 1919; New Zealand Expeditionary Force certificate of discharge; card for the 1st battery NZFA First Annual reunion 13th August 1920; Wellington Returned soldiers Association membership card; Certificate of discharge dated 4th August 1942; Onslow Brass Band Supporters' Club membership card; NZ Military Forces inwards letter regarding application for mufti allowance; and National Service Emergency regulations certificate of enrolment dated 1941. Third section of the album contains a numbered list created by Feslier which gives details about the photographs and some of the papers in the album. The list also refers to addresses. Fourth section of the album contains a selection of black and white photographs and photographic postcards which belonged to Sidney James Anton. Taken by unidentified photographer(s), some probably by Anton. Each photograph has been annotated on the reverse by Feslier with a circled number which corresponds to the numbers on the list in the third section. Many of the photographs and postcards are annotated with messages or descriptions on the reverse, probably by Anton or his family members. Transcriptions made by Feslier of these annotations are included on the list. Image content relates predominantly to Antons' service in World War One. Some images feature Sidney James Anton.
