Description: Complete title is: Chronicle of Leonard and Pauline Perry on their farm in New Zealand, 1926-1930; transcripts of letters home. The collection begins with correspondence between Pauline (then Dickinson) and Leonard Perry prior to Pauline's departure for and marriage in New Zealand, and thereafter is mostly letters from Pauline to her family in England. Perry describes her life as a farmer's wife at Pokuru, near Te Awamutu, in great detail, writing about the daily activities such as feeding the calves, looking after dogs, going to the market, gardening, cooking (with recipes given), leisure and social life, the weather, and other aspects. The letters end with the family's departure for England in July 1930. Most of the letters were written by Pauline Perry to her family in England and were preserved and later transcribed by Robin Perry who compiled and edited them into an unbound volume. Description: Diary describes Young's activities during 1919. From January until July, Young was stationed in London working at sorting mail for New Zealand forces in Great Britain. Most of the entries record what shift he was on, whether he was sorting letters or parcels and the state of the weather. He also records his social activities in London and the visits he made to relatives in various parts of England. In June he describes a visit he made to Glasgow and Edinburgh. On 17 July he returned to Sling Camp and sailed from Plymouth aboard the troop ship `Hororata' on 27 July bound for New Zealand, arriving in Wellington on 19 September. After his return to New Zealand the entries are intermittent apart from a description of a holiday he took in Rotorua, 27 October-7 November. Description: A scrapbook album compiled by Colin Feslier relating to Sidney James Anton. Comprises mainly materials created circa 1918 to circa 1920s which belonged to Anton. First section of the album contains print-outs made by Feslier of online publications and an email relating to Feslier's research into the influenza outbreak on the World War One troop ship HMNZT 'Tahiti' and Feslier's transcription of Anton's Soldiers diary. Second section of the album contains a selection of personal papers which belonged to Sidney James Anton, including papers which he created and that which he accumulated in relation to his war service: handwritten notes, business and visiting cards (some annotated with personal messages to Anton), printed ephemera, newspaper clippings, forms, and certificates. Items of note include: an order for postcards on a business card for "Reginald Haines artist in photography", London; a programme for "New Zealand v South Africa" 28 January 1919; railway warrants for Anton's service leave in the United Kingdom dated March 1919; a New Zealand Expedionary Force pass for Anton dated 16 July 1919; a dance card "Given by New Zealanders resident in Durban to the New Zealand Military Rugby Team 25th August 1919" which is annotated "S J Anton, NZFA"; Leave on discharge certificate dated September 1919; NZR Returned soldiers railway ticket dated October - November 1919; New Zealand Expeditionary Force certificate of discharge; card for the 1st battery NZFA First Annual reunion 13th August 1920; Wellington Returned soldiers Association membership card; Certificate of discharge dated 4th August 1942; Onslow Brass Band Supporters' Club membership card; NZ Military Forces inwards letter regarding application for mufti allowance; and National Service Emergency regulations certificate of enrolment dated 1941. Third section of the album contains a numbered list created by Feslier which gives details about the photographs and some of the papers in the album. The list also refers to addresses. Fourth section of the album contains a selection of black and white photographs and photographic postcards which belonged to Sidney James Anton. Taken by unidentified photographer(s), some probably by Anton. Each photograph has been annotated on the reverse by Feslier with a circled number which corresponds to the numbers on the list in the third section. Many of the photographs and postcards are annotated with messages or descriptions on the reverse, probably by Anton or his family members. Transcriptions made by Feslier of these annotations are included on the list. Image content relates predominantly to Antons' service in World War One. Some images feature Sidney James Anton. Images of note include: Anton and other soldiers in army camp at Featherston and Heretaunga prior to leaving New Zealand; identified gunners on board ship 'Tahiti' (taken before they died onboard); the deck of the HMNZT 'Tahiti' in heavy seas taken a few days out of New Zealand; Anton and other soldiers on leave in South Africa visiting a family; portraits of Anton's sister Etta; Forth Bridge, and soldiers on leave with girls, Edinburgh July 1919; Anton with two donkeys or horses; soldiers onboard the SS 'Hororata' during the return voyage to New Zealand; the SS 'Hororata' itself; town hall, promenade in Durban. The photographic prints and postcards in the third section are in a numeric sequence which corresponds to the numbered paper list in the album. Some numbers are duplicated. There are no photographs which are numbered to match 94, 95, 100, 101, and 102 on the list. The original arrangement of the album has been retained by the Library. Description: Album of photographs compiled by George Gordon Denniston illustrating a soldier's experience of the Gallipoli campaignaand military life in France, September 1915 to June 1918. Photographer(s) unidentified. Album opens with a view of Cathedral Rock, Gallipoli, and follows with other views of the landscape, the trenches, dugouts, troops, life on site, and other activities relating to the campaign. There are pictures of the dead and wounded, and of men and mules bringing water to the trenches. There are also sections on Lemnos, the Greek Island some way off Gallipoli. It functioned as a back-up base during the campaign. Soldiers were landed there prior to going to the front. Hospitals and other services were located there, and Moudhros (Mudros) Harbour provided shelter for scores of warships. The album has views of the countryside and the chief town, Kastron, as well as camps, camp life and warships. The photographs record the departure from Gallipoli via Lemnos for Egypt and Alexandria on board the SS Hororata. There are views of Alexandria Harbour followed by others of Cairo Zoo. Then its Zeitoun military training camp on the outskirts of Caio where the troops were requipped and retrained for the Western Front and the defence of Egypt. Denniston took part in guarding the Suez Canal against Turkish attack before going to France as there is a view of the camp at Serapeum, a town on the canal just north of the Great Bitter Lake. The second half of the album records experiences in France. There are photos of soldiers, horses, regimental groups and the houses and French families they were billeted with. There are no scenes of the site of battle as there are among the Gallipoli photos. The album ends with the return voyage home via the Panama Canal on the USS Tahiti (H.M.N.Z.T. 97) in June 1918.
