Description

Illustrations in three tiers, showing dances, tattooing, a hongi, all in clearings of bush, tree ferns, and palms. The images derive from works by John Webber and Louis de Sainson. At the top, two men greet each other with a hongi, a tattooed man and woman watch a group of eight men dancing in a circle, all holding hands and raising the right left to rest on the left thigh of the next man. In the centre row, a crowd watches four tattooed men dancing in firelight whole at the right, two women tend to a reclining man, possibly combing his hair or about to tattoo him. In the lower row, a group of bare-breasted women dance at the left, while at right a man in a loincloth dances holding a circular shield (Webber's "Man of the Sandwich Islands dancing"), while a tattooed woman kneels, waving her arms above her head.

Numbers, referring to a key (not held) are shown beneath each scene in each row.

It is thought that this may be a page from Johann Georg Heck's 'Ikonographische Encyklopedie der Wissenschaften und Kunste. Entworfen und nach den vorzuglichsten Quellen bearbeitet von Johann Georg Heck', Lepzig, ca. 1849/1860.
