Description

Collection created by Mabel Rosser, and contributed to by Allan Rosser. Comprises:

- Photographs of White Island taken by her father, Gatland Gilberd, between 1927 and 1929.

- Photograph album (heavily annotated) of Gilberd family on White Island, compiled by Mabel.

- Typescript reminiscences of her childhood spent at White Island and also Hokianga while her father was working at the Motukaraka Dairy Company.

- Electronic publication created by Allan Rosser which contains digitised copies of photographic and text materials made or owned by Gatland Gilberd and Mabel Rosser, and Allans' writing on the Gilberd family time on White Island and his photographs documenting his trip there in 2010.

- Manuscript map of White Island - Whakaari crater, dated 4 October 1967, created by Gatland Gilberd.

Arrangement: Negatives housed at 1/4-059925 to 1/4-059955 and 1/2-160180 to 160197, and 1/2-164160 to 1/2-164161.

Mabel Rosser (née Gilberd) spent time during her childhood on White Island and at Motukaraka, Hokianga. Her father, Gatland Gilberd, was an engineer at White Island Products and Motukaraka Dairy Company. Over at least one of the summer holidays the Gilberd family stayed on White Island.

Allan Rosser of Glenvale, Queensland, Australia is the son of Mabel Rosser (nee Gilberd) and the grandson of Gatland Gilberd, who was an engineer working on White Island, 1927-1929.

Description: A manuscript map of White Island - Whakaari crater, dated 4 October 1967, created by Gilbert Gatland who was an engineer on the island. The map shows various volcanic features, including craters, hot springs and fumaroles, and topography by contours, ridges and spot heights. Precise leveling pegs are marked and labelled. The map imprint states "WHITE IS. CRATER 4 Oct. 1967. Scale 5 ch = 1 in; Fumeroles X PRECISE LEVEL PEGS". The map is both geological and topographical, showing contours, elevations and geological details. Labelled features include - Track to old Camp, Cairn, Crater rim, Hot Springs, Old Factory. Notes of historical geological events and activity, include: "Edge of old lake", "1933 Crater", "Sandy flat encrusted with sublimates", "Area covered with conical mounds of 1914 mud flow", and "Rock Slide". The map is supplemented with names of geological features, including Gulliver Crater, Noisy Nellie, Schubert's Fairy, and Donald Fumeroles. Also includes tracing paper annotated by Allan Rosser.
