Description: Programme cover shows an illustration by R Hawcridge of a mounted soldier blowing a bugle, in front of a New Zealand flag. The verso of the front cover shows "Sketches in camp", also by Hawcridge, a series of illustrations of army camp life: Watering the horses, Jumping test, Bringing his dinner, Morning toilet, Shooting test, The farrier, A question of method. The facing illustration, titled "Where will Kruger be when his light 'Bobs' out?" shows a caricature of Kruger as a candle being snuffed out by "The bell of New York" held by a military man (possibly Field Marshal Lord Roberts). portrait photographs of Tom Pollard and Mr W O'Sullivan, details of the New Zealand and British flags, with ferns, roses, shamrocks and thistles representing Britain and New Zealand. Description: Images probably on cigarette cards, showing the following soldiers and medical personnel serving in the South African War: Lieut Seddon, Major Jowsey, Major Francis, Hastie, Hazlett, C McGregor, Ellis, Gourley, Colvin, Orbell, Palmer, Dr Burns, Nurse Campbell, Nurse Ross and Nurse Williamson. Donor reports that another copy of one of these cards had a note of the printer J Wilkie & Company. The original set may have contained 32 cards. The donor reports that other cards in the series showed portraits of Barclay, Berland, Heselden, Hawkes, Nurse Hay, Humphries, Jackson, Lieutenant J R Macdonald, McLennan, Nelson, Ross, J Stevenson, Lieutenant Tubman, Trooper Wilson and Captain Fulton. There was also a card whose portrait was unidentified, making a total of 32. (See letter from Mr W M King, at C.AA.001.007.003, 22 May 2006). Spelling is kharki, not khaki A set of these cards (lacking the card for Captain Fulton) was sold in an auction in Great Britain in 1992; otherwise the set is considered to be very rare (letter from Mr W M King, as above) Other Titles - Khaki Quantity: 15 colour photo-mechanical print(s).
