Description: Photographs collected, and taken, by John William Tetley (1876-1934) - member of the 1st New Zealand contingent to the South African War (1899-1902). The photographs fall into two general groups. One is mainly images of bridges destroyed during the war; the other is mainly group photographs of new Zealand soldiers, and other groups which probably relate to the Imperial Military Railways in South Africa. Includes a biographical note about John William Tetley John William Tetley was born in Bradford England. At some time he came to New Zealand. In the South African War he was a member of the first New Zealand Contingent, and was present at Kimberly Camp on the 21st of February 1900. He then joined the Provisional Transvaal Constabulary at Pretoria (21 June 1900 to 5 March 1901) and was promoted to Orderly Corporal. Following this he joined the Imperial Military Railways and worked in the office of the engineer at Bloemfontain. He remained in South Africa after the war, returning to New Zealand in 1907. Description: Voucher printed in green with the British coat of arms at the top. It is signed by Captain H Greener, chief paymaster, and issued by authority of Colonel R S S Baden-Powell. There are illustrations of a machine-gun[?] operator and a soldier beside a cannon. The ticket is rubber-stamped with the number 4816 (the 6 is indistinct). According to the website at http://www.tokencoins.com/rarest.htm, "this ten-shilling note was printed from a woodcut, using a croquet mallet cut in half for the block. As each issue of notes was released into circulation, the army paymaster gave the notes authority by depositing a cheque of an equivalent amount into the Mafeking branch of the Standard Bank of South Africa".
