Description: Journal relating to S M Miller's travels around England and Wales, and her trip back to New Zealand via Ceylon, ca 1954-1955. Contains impressions of towns and cities visited including Stratford, Stow-On-The-Wold, Oxford, Llangollen, Conway, Ross, Monmouth, The Cotswolds, Dorchester and London. Miller describes castles and natural features (flowers and geography), hitch-hiking, bus travel, walks, and staying in hostels. Includes her reflections on other tourists from New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa, with opinions voiced regarding accents and manner of dress. Much of her time in London is focussed on Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family, including the Royal Derby, Royal Tournament, and various parades. Also contains reminiscence about her time [and colleagues?] working as a [dental nurse?]. Miller records impressions of Ceylon when her ship stopped their en route home. Includes account of trips taken into unidentified city, with a focus on people and landscape, dangerous driving, monks, and a visit to a tea factory. Contains pressed flowers, a newspaper clipping, and an unused envelope printed with an Aberdeen Commonwealth Line emblem. Impressions of towns, cities, and other locations visited, including: Magillycuddy's Reeks, Limerick, County Clare, Galway, Donegal Bay, Ballycastle, Chester, Worcester, Gloucester, The Cotswolds, Oxford, London, Angouleme, Toulouse, Cannes, Monte Carlo, Cagnes, St Paul's, Grenoble, Bianco, Milan, Lake Como, Bologna, Florence, Pisa, and Rome. Contains references to hitch-hiking, the various standards of hostels stayed in, art and architecture, other tourists and their behaviour, social customs (dancing, food, drinking), the Bodleian Library, obtaining visas, seeing a play by T S Elliot 'The Confidential Clerk', crossing the English Channel, beaches, hiking in the Alps, landscapes, casinos, agriculture (vineyards, sheep, goats, donkeys, crops), the weather, autumn, and industry (a visit to a car factory [Morris Minor?] in England). Diary entries in Ireland include topics such as politics, superstition, and Catholicism. French attitudes to the British are discussed. And the behaviour of Italian men towards female hitch-hikers is commented on.
