Description: Album originally owned by Harry Lister, and probably compiled by him. Many images also possibly taken by him. The album is inscribed with two addresses: Lister's address in Australia and the Lister family home 'Maronan' near Ashburton, New Zealand Images are taken chiefly in the 1930s, mainly when he was travelling overseas competing in boxing matches, particularly to Australia and England. Lister toured as Ambrose Palmer's sparring partner. Many of the photographs depict Lister with friends, acquaintances and possibly members of his extended family. Includes autographed photographs of boxers and others. Description: Letters written by Herbert (Bert) Charles Thomas to his parents from Auckland, Hamilton and Tokanui (1945-1946), then from Sydney, the `Asturias', South Africa, Luanshya in Northern Rhodesia, Dar-Es-Salaam, Mikindani in Tanganyika (1946-1949) and finally from England (1949-1950). He described his daily work while in New Zealand, experiences with landladies, his experiences looking for work and travelling in various parts of Africa. The letters have been transcribed by Thomas's sister, Betty Brookes, and family background information supplied by another sister, Ann Turvey. Recalls early years in England with family moving house several times before eventually coming to New Zealand and buying a small holding to grow tomatoes in Halswell [Christchurch]. Recalls making friends at Hillmorton [school] and quickly being identified as a New Zealander. Talks about involvement in Vietnam War protest and petition against Springbok Tour while at Lincoln University. Refers to views of main-stream media. Describes the various jobs undertaken before marrying Lyn and going to Chile, travelling through Peru and Bolivia and down to Argentina and eventually going to England, enroling at Imperial College to complete a masters' degree. Mentions subject of thesis - decision-making rules in pest control. Also hitch-hiked to West Africa before returning in 1977 to take up teaching fellowship at Lincoln University. Outlines career in social work, becoming President of the New Zealand Association of Social Workers. Recalls being Assistant Manager to the Owairaka Boys Home. Backgrounds involvement in the setting up of the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) in Ponsonby ca 1969. Discusses the issues being presented, the main one being housing. Her father, the Reverend Robert Wood, came to New Zealand in the late 1800s and her mother, Charlotte McGregor, was the daughter of Rev Dr James McGregor, Presbyterian Minister at Columba Church in Oamaru. Mentions his interest in girls' education, her mother being one of the early Otago University graduates and her sister, Margaret Patrick, becoming the headmistress of Rangiruru. Describes moving to the house in Karori in 1919 in which she still lives. Compares rooms and facilities then and now. Talks about working in various Wellington offices and attending night school at Victoria University. Describes going to England to work then joining her sister and her husband in Geneva in 1939. Discusses staying there until the end of World War II and her work with War Prisoners' Aid of the YMCA. Describes living conditions, the food and being the only English speaking person in the organisation. Discusses her dealings and correspondence with British prisoners and the number of New Zealand prisoners who came in. Describes going to Japan after World War II with the YMCA and YWCA. Description: Colour transparencies mostly taken by Wynne Wiley during her OE (overseas experience) in the United Kingdom and Europe circa 1969-1973, and Italy in 1978. A few are commercially produced images. Images are of scenes during her travels in Great Britain and Europe, her friends and Scottish cousins, and of herself. Letters cover 1969 to 1975 and document her experiences overseas and concerns with family in New Zealand. Ephemera relates to shipboard invitations and pass, '10 Commandments for Travellers!', tourist map of Te Aroha, school broadcast on women's suffrage, and a booklet on the Friendly Road Choir. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Arrangement: Letters and transparencies have been retained in the order provided by the donor. Letters are in date order. Transparencies have been organised by geographical location and then date order - some slides are not in sequence. Slides and letters document two trips Wynne Wiley made to England and Europe between 1969 and 1975, and slides of a trip to Italy in 1978. On her first trip, she traveled to the UK on the boat 'Northern Star' via Panama, spent 6 months in London, a year in Bern (Switzerland) teaching English as a second Language, then back to Great Britain until January 1972 when she went back to to New Zealand on the S S Canberra. She had various jobs in an office, teaching English as a Second Language, as a companion and as a nanny. She also travelled in Spain, Austria, Switzerland, France, Corfu, and in the United Kingdom, including Wales and Scotland, where she met up with cousins. She taught English as a Foreign Language. She stayed in New Zealand for 1972 teaching in Mount Maunganui before flying back to England. Her second trip covers the period 1972 to 1975. Description: John Buck was born in Auckland in 1942. Describes how his father served on warships in World War II and the family lived in naval housing including on Motuihe Island. Recalls their move to Wellington in 1947 when his father was demobbed. Discusses family relationships. Describes going to Auckland in 1962 to work for Arthur Hughes, a firm which imported supplies for beverage bottlers. Notes that he helped at a vineyard belonging to the firm and became interested in wine growing. Recalls meeting Eric Roberts of Grant's Whisky who helped him get into a course on wines and spirits in London. Talks about the trip over by ship and marrying his girlfriend Wendy in London. Recalls London in the 1960s, influences including Mary Quant and the Beatles and meeting the Rolling Stones. Describes working at Stowells of Chelsea while he did the two year course. Discusses a campervan tour of Europe, different alcohols, hospitality and the European respect for wine. Contrasts this with New Zealand's `boozy' culture. Describes returning to New Zealand, meeting Graham Kerr, the `Galloping Gourmet' and the offer of a partnership in the National Food and Wine Centre. Recalls his involvement in the Campaign for Civilised Drinking with Tony and Phil Ashenden in 1967. Mentions the number of wine and food societies, being cellarmaster for the Wellington Wine and Food Society and encouraging the consumption of New Zealand wines. A trip to Japan

Description: This is a record of a trip to Japan probably via places in South East Asia. The organisation is somewhat confused as about one third of the pages are loose, so are not in the original order of things. The journey may have included stops in Malaya or Indonesia. There are a number of photographs of groups of passengers on deck, many of which include John Robert McKenzie and wife Annie. One photograph shows them in a rickshaw. There is a dramatic view of local workers climbing ladders up the side of the ship carrying baskets of coal and tipping them into open chutes. A settlement of covered boats seen from an embankment. A view from the sea of a town backed by terraced cultivated hillsides. The largest group of photographs are of Japan. These include - Japanese gardens. The statue of Buddha at Kamakura. Views of Mount Fujiama. A view down over a harbour city [which may be Hong Kong, so not Japan]. Traditional houses along a canal. Small children in traditional dress. Women and children in traditional costume walking in the rain under paper parasols. People in a view down a city street. Woman carrying baskets of pumkins on a yoke over her sholder. Description: Photographic prints relating to boxer Harry Lister. Mainly taken between the mid 1920s to 1945. Earlier images show Lister as a young rugby player, and boxer in Greymouth, and a time in Australia on a building site. Later images show the period in England as a boxer, and a few photographs showing himself and his brother Louis as World War II soldiers. Also includes: - autographed photographs of a range of celebrities, including speedway motorcyclist Tommy Price and Irish actor Anew McMaster, collected when Lister worked as a masseur. Some comment positively on the massages they received. - a still from the film 'Pack up your troubles' featuring Wylie Watson and Reginald Purdell, and including Lister.
