Description

Photographs taken and collected by amateur photographer Neville Mosen, and Nicol family photographs possibly collected by Neville's wife Vera, whose mother was born Florence Nicol.

Collected and family photographs include images taken early 1900s to 1920s; most other images were taken circa 1930s-1970s. Includes:

-Many images taken in the Ruapehu district, particularly Mounts Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. Includes Ngauruhoe eruption photographs taken between 1945 and possibly 1954.

-Images of Tongariro Tramping Club groups and Mosen family groups on tramping trips.

-Photographs taken on trips Neville took to the Milford Track, Southland, and Arthur's Pass, Canterbury.

-Family photographs.

Taken by Neville Mosen circa 1936 to 1937, and possibly some taken by other unidentified photographer(s). Contains scenic views and views of the Club members on bush walks and skiing in Tongariro National Park, featuring Ruapehu, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and surrounding environs, the Pinnacles at Blue Bluffs, Ruapehu crater lake, Tama Lakes, The Chateau, Whakapapa glacier, Karioi Lakes, Mangawhero River and various tramping huts. Bruce Davis, an amateur photographer who lived in Raetihi is identified. Also includes views of Raetihi township and Horopito locality, Napier, Tauranga (rail bridge and The Strand), and Ngauruhoe erupting (possibly 1937 eruption). Also includes views of Tom Parker posing with the fountain he gifted to Napier in 1936 and scenes of a parade and bonfire in Raetihi to mark the coronation of King George VI in 1937. Description: A photograph album given to Vera Nicol at Christmas 1925 by "Dorrie", which contains commercial and amateur photographs taken by unknown photographers between 1925 and the 1930s. Some photographs are identified; many are not. Includes family photographs, possibly at home in Marton as well as on family trips to Rotorua and Castlecliff. Also includes many photographs of scenery at Marton, New Plymouth, Rotorua, Rotoma, Castlecliff, Dunedin, Oamaru, Taranaki, Auckland, Cambridge, Coromandel, and Tauranga. Includes scenes of the University of Auckland Clocktower Building, Auckland Zoo, and Oamaru Gardens. Includes three photographs taken in India, possibly sent to Vera by Grace and Alice Clemance, who are pictured in one photograph. There are also photographs of a Presbyterian Bible Class Conference in Oamaru in 1926-1927, the Dunedin Exhibition 1925-1926, a scene of several of Nicol family members and others wearing feather cloaks and standing at the front of a painted, carved whare (possibly near Rotorua or Rotoma), and scenes from the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York in 1927 (likely commercial photographs). Some photographs have been torn out. Two prints from the album are also in another group of Nicol family photographs. A group photograph at the Bible Class Conference is at PAColl-10552-2-9 and a print of a family picnic is at PAColl-10552-2-5. Three by Marton photographers (Neville's wife's family came from Marton. Her mother's maiden name was Nicol). One by Henry Billens that possibly shows a household dramatic group. Two by Bell Brothers: a portrait of young women, possibly a school group with their teacher. It is labelled "Etta Nuttall. Winter 5 Harry St Tauranga (Henderson)". The other Bell Brothers image (damaged) shows the opening of the Marton Bowling Club Season, October 10, 1906. 15 images taken circa 1940s-1960s relating to Neville Mosen, his wife, their families and friends, including ones at the Mangawhero River and the Mangaturuturu Falls and one of Neville and wife Vera on the front step of their first home in Raetihi. Description: Chiefly photographs of Mounts Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro and the areas surrounding them. Also three images of Mount Taranaki and one that is possibly the Southern Alps. All taken about 1940s-1950s. Most photographs are likely to have been taken by Neville Mosen. Some may have been collected by him. Includes some taken during eruptions at Mount Ngauruhoe between 1949 and 1954. Description: Photographs taken by Neville Mosen of Mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe between 1945 and 1954, and Nicol family photographs and other photographs taken in Marton by unknown photographers in the early 1900s, possibly collected by Neville's wife Vera, whose mother was born Florence Nicol in Marton. PAColl-0670-1-1 shows several men standing inside a partially constructed house. "Marton" is inscribed on the back. PAColl-0670-1-2 shows several men and boys, one girl, and a dog standing outside John Murray Nicol's Marton Bakery. Several of the men are wearing aprons; one is holding a sack of flour and another is holding a large woven basket. The girl and one boy hold shopping baskets. A bicycle stands propped against a hitching post in the foreground. It was likely taken between 1906 and 1910. PAColl-0670-1-3 is a photograph of a group of men standing on the doorstep of what appears to be an official building of some kind. All the men are wearing suits except two men at the front of the group in working aprons, one of whom is holding a plasterer's hawk and finishing trowel, suggesting that the photograph may have been taken after a stone or plaque laying ceremony. It is inscribed on the back "Marton". PAColl-0670-1-4 is a photograph of a group of young women, possibly including Florence Ward (nee Nicol). It is inscribed on the back "Mrs Ward Tauranga" and "We think that this photo was taken sometime about -[illegible] 1907 - or 1908 Will be thinking of you all Gratis as always Nell Niell". PAColl-0670-2-01 to -2-10 are photographs taken by Neville Mosen; most are inscribed on the back, and one is stamped "N. H. Mosen Photographer Raetihi". There are two of Mount Ngauruhoe erupting in 1954 and four of Mount Ruapehu erupting in 1945, taken from Raetihi, Makaranui and National Park; one is hand-coloured. Other photographs show a view from a boat on the Whanganui River and various views of Mount Ruapehu from Makaranui and Raetihi, one entitled "The Long White Cloud" showing lenticular cloud over Mount Ruapehu. John Murray Nicol appears in the Wise's Directory as a baker in Broadway, Marton in 1906 and 1908. John Murray Nicol was Florence Nicol's father. Includes images from a Tramping Club trip to Rotorua; views of several tramping huts, including Parawai Tramping Club about to repair Mangaiti Hut; Brian Mosen with "his first and last deer shot". Some photographs have been hand-coloured. Description: Mounted family photographs, taken by E A Philipps, Alan Spicer, William John Clarke, and unknown photographers, from possibly 1910 to the 1920s. Most of the photographs are of the Nicol family (Vera Mosen's mother's family) as well as two from the Mosen family. PAColl-10552-2-1 is by E. A Philllips and shows Edwin Herbert Mosen on the left and Robert John Mosen on the right of a large tree they are cutting down. As well as the photographer's name on the left front, the mount is printed on the right front with "late of Dunedin and Invercargill". PAColl-10552-2-2 is a wedding group, showing, from left to right, Ivy Rose, Dora Lillian Rose (the bride), Edwin Herbert Mosen (the groom), and Robert John Mosen. PAColl-10552-2-3 is a photograph of Elizabeth (Bessie) Ward and Vera Florence Ward as children. PAColl-10552-2-4 is a studio portrait of six Nicol siblings, including Florence (left), Frank (seated), Vera, Rose Nicol (seated right), and two others. In it Florence Nicol is younger than in her 1913 wedding photograph; the photograph was possibly taken about 1910. PAColl-10552-2-5 is a Nicol family group seated outdoors. Names are inscribed in pencil at the bottom of the print. From left to right " Uncle Jack [Nicol], grandma, Frank [Nicol] , Hope (Jack's wife) [Nicol], Nellie, Aunty Rose [Nicol]". The photograph is inscribed on the back "The Mosen family Raetihi" (which has been crossed out) and "The Nichol family Marton"; the 'h' in 'Nichol' has been crossed out. PAColl-10552-2-6 is a photograph of Norman, Florence (nee Nicol) and Elizabeth Ward. It is inscribed on the front left "taken October 1914". It is inscribed on the back "Xmas 1914 To Nell with love from Norman & Florrie wishing you a Merry Xmas & a happy New Year". PAColl-10552-2-7 is a photograph of Elizabeth (Bessie), Vera and Hugh Ward as children. It is inscribed on the back "Love to Auntie Mary Wishing you many happy returns of the day Aug 1923", in ink. There is also a faint pencilled inscription that says "Gate Pa". PAColl-10552-2-8 is a wedding photograph of Florence Nicol and Norman Ward, taken by Alan Spicer, Wellington. It is inscribed on the back "To Rose from Norman and Florrie Feb 1913". PAColl-10552-2-9 is a group photograph taken by William John Clarke of the Palmerston North District attendees at a Presbyterian Bible Class Conference in Oamaru over late December 1926 to January 1927 that includes Vera Nicol and Jack Nicol. It is inscribed on the back in ink "PN District Palmerston North Marton Feilding Taihape". Two other hands have written in pencil " Timaru [crossed out] Oamaru Conference 1915-1916 [crossed out] not 1916". There are other prints of PAColl-10552-2-5 and PAColl-10552-2-9 in Vera Nicol's photograph album (PA1-o-1972). The donor provided notes with names of subjects for some of the prints, which were later annotated by an ATL curator in discussion with the donor. These notes are in a separate envelope in the box holding the prints.
