Description

Mounted family photographs, taken by E A Philipps, Alan Spicer, William John Clarke, and unknown photographers, from possibly 1910 to the 1920s. Most of the photographs are of the Nicol family (Vera Mosen's mother's family) as well as two from the Mosen family.

PAColl-10552-2-1 is by E. A Philllips and shows Edwin Herbert Mosen on the left and Robert John Mosen on the right of a large tree they are cutting down. As well as the photographer's name on the left front, the mount is printed on the right front with "late of Dunedin and Invercargill".

PAColl-10552-2-2 is a wedding group, showing, from left to right, Ivy Rose, Dora Lillian Rose (the bride), Edwin Herbert Mosen (the groom), and Robert John Mosen.

PAColl-10552-2-3 is a photograph of Elizabeth (Bessie) Ward and Vera Florence Ward as children.

PAColl-10552-2-4 is a studio portrait of six Nicol siblings, including Florence (left), Frank (seated), Vera, Rose Nicol (seated right), and two others. In it Florence Nicol is younger than in her 1913 wedding photograph; the photograph was possibly taken about 1910.

PAColl-10552-2-5 is a Nicol family group seated outdoors. Names are inscribed in pencil at the bottom of the print. From left to right " Uncle Jack [Nicol], grandma, Frank [Nicol] , Hope (Jack's wife) [Nicol], Nellie, Aunty Rose [Nicol]". The photograph is inscribed on the back "The Mosen family Raetihi" (which has been crossed out) and "The Nichol family Marton"; the 'h' in 'Nichol' has been crossed out.

PAColl-10552-2-6 is a photograph of Norman, Florence (nee Nicol) and Elizabeth Ward. It is inscribed on the front left "taken October 1914". It is inscribed on the back "Xmas 1914 To Nell with love from Norman & Florrie wishing you a Merry Xmas & a happy New Year".

PAColl-10552-2-7 is a photograph of Elizabeth (Bessie), Vera and Hugh Ward as children. It is inscribed on the back "Love to Auntie Mary Wishing you many happy returns of the day Aug 1923", in ink. There is also a faint pencilled inscription that says "Gate Pa".

PAColl-10552-2-8 is a wedding photograph of Florence Nicol and Norman Ward, taken by Alan Spicer, Wellington. It is inscribed on the back "To Rose from Norman and Florrie Feb 1913".

PAColl-10552-2-9 is a group photograph taken by William John Clarke of the Palmerston North District attendees at a Presbyterian Bible Class Conference in Oamaru over late December 1926 to January 1927 that includes Vera Nicol and Jack Nicol. It is inscribed on the back in ink "PN District Palmerston North Marton Feilding Taihape". Two other hands have written in pencil " Timaru [crossed out] Oamaru Conference 1915-1916 [crossed out] not 1916".

There are other prints of PAColl-10552-2-5 and PAColl-10552-2-9 in Vera Nicol's photograph album (PA1-o-1972).

The donor provided notes with names of subjects for some of the prints, which were later annotated by an ATL curator in discussion with the donor. These notes are in a separate envelope in the box holding the prints.
