Description

A weka seen from the side, pecking at the ground. A fantail, top right. The head and tail feather of a huia. The weka appears to have been drawn from a living specimen, the huia from a dead specimen

Description: Two decorated or gourds (calabashes) or koraha used by Maori for water carriage. Below them are silhouettes of two men, copied from Australian Aboriginal rock drawings. One figure has the annotation '6 ft' below it, and 'legs too long and feet too large' to one side; this figure is standing with legs astride and arms out wide. The second figure to the right has arms upraised and a more animal-shaped head than the first. Description: The head of a dead huia specimen (watercolour, called by Angas Neomorphia gouldii), a watercolour huia tail feather and a pencil drawing of a weka. A small watercolour of a fantail is in the top right corner. The inscriptions appear to be in another hand, not Angas's.
