Five separate works:
"Hows Bay Feb 1885" (also entitled "Bush on fire, 8 Feb 1885, taken at the camp on the edge of 40 mile ...") shows smoke over a hill or headland seen across the water. The hill shows denuded trees, as a result of the fire.
Hawks Bay Feb 1885, (in fact also entitled "April 16 1885, Hawk's Bay") shows a bullock team of ten bullocks pulling a high laden wagon through a ford, with cabbage trees all around.
Kaponga fern Jan 1885, (also entitled "Kaponga Nikau") shows a tent pitched beneath a stand of nikau palms
"Wellington December 1884" is also entitled "Wellington, Feb 8 1885", with notes indicating Lower Hutt across the bay and the Rimutaka mountains in the distance
"Pohui April 1885" (also entitled "Pohui, April 13th 85") shows a stable building with a fneced pen containing two horses. The building stands on a gently sloping hill with further hills in the distance.
These five watercolours were painted by either William or and John Doubleday from 1884-85 while they were travelling around the world - on doctor's orders to cure lung infections.
