Includes detailed views of Wellington, Rotorua, and the thermal area, Auckland,and Hawkes Bay, including several views of Maori pa, 1884-1885. Also includes views of Honolulu, Australia, Madeira and Tenerife.
These "23 watercolours were painted by William and John Doubleday from 1884-85 while they were travelling around the world - on doctor's orders to cure lung infections. The two brothers arrived in Wellington in December 1884 and moved north to Auckland with stops at Hawke's Bay, Waipukurau, Tukituki River area, Taupo and Waiwera. From Auckland, they went to Australia, Honolulu, the Sandwich Islands and finally settled in Colorado where they bought into a silver mine with two Americans. Shortly afterwards they died of typhus" (Quotation from newsclipping concerning their 1986 sale at Sotheby's, accompanying the paintings upon their arrival in the Library)
