Description

Original sketches made to illustrate Lady Annie Brassey's book The last voyage, 1886-1887, published by Longmans, 1889. Sketches made in Port Said, Australia, Burma, Sarawak, Borneo, Singapore and India. Also includes sketches of the ship `Sunbeam' in which the voyage was undertaken.

Includes a numbered list of contents in the hand of Alexander Turnbull

The original blue morocco-bound case in which this sketchbook was acquired is alongside it on the shelf

The voyage departed from England, via Gibraltar, Algiers, Malta, Port Said, Aden, India, Sri Lanka, Rangoon in Burma, Singapore, Sarawak in Borneo, Macassar in the Celebes, Lombok, Albany, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in Australia, through Torres Strait, across the Indian Ocean to Mauritius, via the Cape to the eastern Atlantic and back to England

Pritchett was an English illustrator who visited the Pacific and Australia in the 1880s

Provenance: From the collection of Alexander Turnbull. Inside front cover includes his small bookplate 'From the collection of Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull, Wellington New Zealand'. There is also a list of contents in his hand at the front of the volume. An associated copy of Annie Brassey's book The last voyage of Lady Brassey (1889), given to Robert Pritchett and annotated by him was acquired by Alexander Turnbull, and it appears likely that these drawings were purchased at the same time.
