Description: Published by Whitcombe & Tombs, 1930. Presentation copy to James Cowan by H. E. Partridge with a dedication message to Cowan from Partridge tipped in to front of book, and loose papers which were laid into the book. These include photographs, clippings, correspondence, research notes, maps, and drafts. The photographs consist of eleven prints which include portraits of Hera Puna, Te Rauparaha, and Tamati Waka Nene. They also include one image of Mt Ngauruhoe erupting (with a group of people watching it [circa 1930s-1940s]), an image of the 'ceiling of Maori Church' in Otaki [Rangiatea] showing kōwhaiwhai, and another image featuring tukutuku and a poupou of Maui fishing up the North Island 'Te Ika a Maui'. Description: Interviewer Mere Grant (Ngāti Kahungunu) talks to Te Puoho Katene, kaumātua of Ngāti Toa, about the Ngāti Toa taonga held at the Pataka Art + Museum (Pātaka Museum of Arts and Cultures) at Porirua. Interview is recorded at the museum. Katene talks about photographic portraits of 'Nga rangatira o Ngāti Toa' by Neil Penman, and likens them to painters such as Gainsborough and Reynolds. He also talks about going overseas for a seminar and world conference for ISME (International Society of Music Educators) in Norway and Helsinki, and how he admires the retention of Māori culture and judging for music/choral competitions. Description: Six photographic prints relating to Charles Frederick Goldie, in cardboard frames, taken by unknown photographer between 1905 and 1935. Some of the frames contain annotations by Goldie and James Cowan. Comprises: - Goldie posed in his studio at his easel, holding a painting tray, with framed paintings on the wall behind him. The annotation reads "Best wishes to friend Cowan. C. F. Goldie Jan 1935". There is also an annotation on the back of the cardboard frame written by James Cowan which reads "To be returned to James Cowan. Please keep clean & don't mark". - Goldie posed at his easel holding a painting tray. The annotation reads "To James Cowan. Sincerely from C. F. Goldie. Jan' 1905". This image appears to be taken during the same session as the above photograph. It seems that the 1905 date refers to the date the photographs were taken, and the 1935 date above may have been when Goldie sent Cowan the photographs. - Photograph of painting by Goldie of Tamati Waka Nene, with annotations by James Cowan on the back of the cardboard frame which reads "Property of James Cowan. Tamati Waka Nene Chief of Ngapuhi who fought against Hone Heke 1845. (The original of this painting was presented to Lord Bledisloe by Mr [?] Goldie for Waitangi Memorial House, Bay of Islands, 1934). C F Goldie copyright". Waka Nene has a full facial moko and wears a korowai, a huia feather, a shark tooth ear pendant, a tiki, and a kuru pounamu (ear pendant). - Photograph of painting by Goldie of Tumai Tawhiti, with annotations by James Cowan on the back of the cardboard frame which reads "J. Cowan. Tumai Tawhiti a relic of the cannibal era - Rotorua. Lived at Tarukanga, on the range above Rotorua. C. F. Goldie copyright". Tawhiti has a full facial moko, wears a korowai, a tiki, two kuru pounamu (ear pendants) and a huia feather. - Photograph of painting by Goldie of Atama Paparangi dated 1934, with annotations by James Cowan on the back of the cardboard frame: "James Cowan. 'An aristocrat' The original painting was bought by Lady Bledisloe 1934). A chief of the Ngapuhi tribe named Atama Paparangi who lived at Hokianga. Copyright C F Goldie". Also has a newsprint photograph stuck to the back of the frame which includes an image of Goldie. Paparangi wears a korowai, a tiki, and two kuru pounamu. - Photograph of painting by Goldie of Hori Pokai dated 1933, with annotations by James Cowan on the back of the cardboard frame: "James Cowan. Hori Pokai of Coromandel. The original painting was exhibited in Paris salon, 1935. C. F. Goldie copyright". Pokai has a facial moko, wears a bowler hat, and has a pipe in his mouth. Description: Digital copies of watercolours by Isaac Coates of fifty-two Maori, all drawn in profile. Most are from the Nelson, Motueka, Golden Bay and Marlborough regions, with a few from Port Nicholson (Wellington) and New Plymouth. Subjects include Rangihaeata, his wife 'Ranguira', Rauparaha, his wife 'Cootia', Panni and Pitoki of Queen Charlotte Sound, Manu (Wiremu Katene te Puoho), Piro (or Pero), Iwikau and his wife Hingatu, and child and Rupene all of Wakapuaka near Nelson, 'Potie ... Port Nick', 'A youth of the Motuwaka [Motueka] tribe', 'Piki, Kokiri Tribe', 'Piki Warra' of Motueka, 'E Piko, Kafia Chief' and others.
