Some minutes are handwritten, or annotated and highlighted. Title supplied by Library. Wellington City Archives took possession of several boxes of material related to Wellington. Arrangement: This collection is a sample of the full Retail NZ archives. As such it came to the Library in no defined order. The archivist created series to reflect the structure of Retail NZ and subsidiaries, trade groups, and associated federations. Within that the arrangement is chronological. The New Zealand Retailers' Federation was set up in 1921. The Federation comprised of 15 nationwide district associations, some of which predated the Federation. They remained autonomous. The Federation was managed by a council appointed by the associations. Several national trade groups representing the various types of stores in the Federation were established. They were subordinate to the council in matters of national policy, but autonomous in matters affecting their own trading sphere. There were also national retail federations, guilds and associations that affiliated with the Federation, such as the New Zealand Commercial Stationers’ Guild. A national secretary and staff looked after general administration. The Federation established a subsidiary organisation (the New Zealand College of Retailing) for training and a limited liability company (Retailer Publishing Company) to publish one of its journals. In 1987 the Federation was wound up and reformed as the Retail and Wholesale Merchants Association, which included retail, distribution and wholesale merchants. It became incorporated at this time. In 2015 it rebranded as Retail NZ.
