Description: Interviw with Keith Stewart, born in Carterton in 1917. Talks about his father Hector Halhead ("Steam") Stewart and grandfather [George Tiffen Stewart] having been inventive engineers, his grandfather inventing vibrated concrete and his father designing and building motorcycles and co-developing the Stewart and Edlin two-stroke engine. Refers to his father obtaining a licence to manufacture refrigerators in New Zealand and talks about the bringing together of Mason & Porter, Alex Harvey and E.A. Saunders. Details his own and his brothers' work histories, mentioning Fisher & Paykel, Hill & Stewart, and H.H. Stewart & Sons. Comments on the "inventors disease" and having 123 of his own inventions listed with eight patented. Refers to hovercraft, a big screen projection system and a phone switching system. Talks about the pumping station at Western Springs which was to have been demolished in 1936 and his father trying to turn it into a mechanical museum. Mentions he did a drawing for the proposal, and the demolition plan being dropped. Comments on scrap steel being shipped to Japan in 1937. Discusses the group of volunteers who got the museum going in the 1960s and obtained artefacts from Matakohe. Mentions the role of Mayor Robbie [Sir Dove-Meyer Robinson]. Comments that his father was not on the MOTAT committee as he expected to be invited but wasn't. Talks about gifts from his family to MOTAT and the involvement of young people in the museum.
