Description: Discusses his work experiences until 1962 when he joined the Woodhill State Forest. Describes how his job was under the Fire Service which serviced all the State Forests in the area. Discusses fire equipment and training. Talks about the need to stop sand from covering farms and railway tracks. Gives a historical background to this mentioning the Public Works Act in the 1930s. Recalls gangs and camps in the Muriwai area and headquarters at Woodhill. Describes a number of inventions including a lupin seed sower, marram grass planter, a machine which traversed sand to get kauri logs and a submersible pump to utilise sea water and put out fires. Discusses toheroa digging, community life, the generations of families at Woodhill and the consequences of the forests being sold by the Government. Mentions Dan Young, Ned and Charlie Fenton and Arthur Terlesk. Talks about the tree nurseries, the effect of poisons on the bird life, and whale strandings and shipwrecks on Muriwai Beach. Mentions the `Warkworth'. Talks about the release of fallow deer by Alfred Buckland, deer farming by John Harmer and deer hunting at South Head. Description: Shows various inventions, some associated with rapid travel, including flying machines, a vaccuum tube transporting passengers between London and Bengal, and a bridge linking England and Cape Town. One flying machine, a walrus, wombat or bat, is 'for New South Wales, with convicts'. There is a steam-driven horse called Velocity, carrying five riders; a stagecoach capable of going from London to Bath in 6 hours; a 'quick conveyance for the Irish emigrants' (a cannon shooting people across a large distance, probably to America) and a 'Model for a new church designed by the Mammoths of Taste'. The monogram, lower left, of a man in a top hat, is intended to show Paul Pry, the pseudonym of William Heath. Paul Pry, a comedy, was performed at the Haymarket Theatre, London in 1825. Description: Norman Deans Porritt born Wanganui 1908. Outlines family background - father, Harold Elliott Porritt, the youngest pupil in New Zealand to get Matriculation (aged 12), was a lover of horses and bred pedigree Clydesdale draught horses. Recalls early childhood spent in Marton, Matamata and Cambridge; home life on the farm; transport, mainly by horse and gig, until family got first motor car, a Ford, which father learned to drive by `trial and error'; religion and Sunday activities; social life, education and employment which commenced with Customs in Auckland at the age of 16 years. Briefly describes his first work place, with reference to coke fires in winter and first boss, Stan Harrap; basic starting salary which included an extra boarding allowance. Mentions Public Service Association. Other topics discussed include: move to Statistics in Head Office and refers to the `Blue Book' which contained statistics of imports and exports from ports all over New Zealand; Social life, with reference to the Pier Hotel; promotion; move to Napier as Examining Officer, describing Napier Port during late 1930s; The Depression; Marine and Fisheries duties; impact of Import Licensing; introduction of Sales Tax in 1933; transfer to Wellington, with reference to wharf police. Recalls being called for World War II service with the Air Force, training at Harewood and Whenuapai and being due to go to Guadalcanal, when he had an accident at the rifle range requiring two years in hospital. Refers to petrol shortage during wartime and recalls inventing a coal produced gas device, which meant car would start on petrol and switch over to gas - describes mechanical process. Talks about post war work with Customs. Mentions the 1940 Exhibition and the 1951 Waterside Strike when everyone had to have a special police pass to get on the wharf.
