Manuscript is a history of three generations of the Jordan family of Herefordshire, England. Focuses on the effect of the enclosures of the mid-18th century English rural life, and the story of William Jordan Junior and his wife Catherine who emigrated to New Zealand in 1864, followed by his parents and six siblings, to live in Christchurch, Canterbury, and near Inglewood, Taranaki.

It also traces the story of the wider Jordan family who left Herefordshire in three chain migrations from 1864 to 1874.
