Description

Photocopies made by Joan McHarg of typed transcripts made in 1974 by Ella Marion Horne (nee Grant) of handwritten letters from Orlando Newton to his wife Ann Newton. The letter of 24 February 1810 is written on board the brig transport Amphitrite while off Portsmouth.The letter of 1 December 1812 was written from Talavera, Spain. Orlando Newton describes being stabbed while in Gibralta and nine months recovery before sailing again to Malta then Sicily.

Original letters by Orlando Newton are held at Library reference number MS-Papers-5059-14.

The original letters were brought by the donor Joan McHarg's grandmother, Annie Louisa Grant (nee Hemming) to New Zealand in 1911. The letters are from 39th Regiment Sergeant Orlando Newton to his wife Ann, who was a member of the Hemming family.
