Description: Written by Orlando Newton, a sergeant in the 39th Regiment, from the Amphetrite (?) transport ship, and from `Talavarra' (Talavera), Spain to his wife Ann. Custodial history sourced from information held in MS-Papers-12773. For transcripts of these letters see MS-Papers-12773 Quantity: 1 folder(s) (2 letters). Physical Description: Holograph Provenance: Letters brought to New Zealand by Annie Louisa Grant (nee Hemming) in 1911, grandmother of Joan McHarg. McHarg lent them to a Colonel Wallace. On his death his collection was sold. It is unknown how the letters came into the possession of Phillip Patrick O'Shea.

Description: Photocopies made by Joan McHarg of typed transcripts made in 1974 by Ella Marion Horne (nee Grant) of handwritten letters from Orlando Newton to his wife Ann Newton. The letter of 24 February 1810 is written on board the brig transport Amphitrite while off Portsmouth.The letter of 1 December 1812 was written from Talavera, Spain. Orlando Newton describes being stabbed while in Gibralta and nine months recovery before sailing again to Malta then Sicily. Descriptive information supplied by donor. Title supplied by Library. Original letters by Orlando Newton are held at Library reference number MS-Papers-5059-14. The original letters were brought by the donor Joan McHarg's grandmother, Annie Louisa Grant (nee Hemming) to New Zealand in 1911. The letters are from 39th Regiment Sergeant Orlando Newton to his wife Ann, who was a member of the Hemming family. Quantity: 1 folder(s) Three pages. Physical Description: Photocopies of handwritten letters and transcriptions. Provenance: The trranscripts were made by the donor's mother. The original letters were once in the possession of the donor, Joan McHarg.
