- Description
Sampling of memes posted to social media in August 2021. The majority of memes in the set were created and posted during the nationwide COVID-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown. Meme subjects include the government's daily COVID-19 briefings at 1pm. Director-General of Health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield features heavily in the memes.
A number of memes reference the Minister for COVID-19 Response, Chris Hipkins, accidentally saying "spread your legs" instead of "stretch your legs" at the 1pm daily briefing on Sunday 22 August. Many of these parody memes deploy the yellow and white diagonal branding of the government's Unite Against COVID-19 campaign.
There is also a large number of memes depicting Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern holding up a heat map of locations of close contacts of the Auckland cluster from the 4pm briefing on 23 August 2021. The memes show Ardern holding up various signs or other images in place of the map of New Zealand.
A smaller number of memes, mainly collected prior to 16 August, reference general topics such as New Zealand politics and politicians, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games, and popular culture in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Aotearoa New Zealand moved to COVID-19 Alert Level 4 nationwide at 11.59 PM on Tuesday 17 August in order to prevent further spread of the highly transmissable delta variant of COVID-19.
