Description

A scene showing the Ruamahanga River, with three British soldiers resting in the foreground on a rise above the river. In the background, three Maori are tethering a canoe on a sandbank in the river.

Attribution: The work was formerly attributed to William Fox by Hamish Keith in the 1970s, but was reattributed to McCleverty by Roger Blackley in the 1990s on stylistic grounds.

Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Reach in the River Ruamahanga Wairarapa [in brushpoint]

Provenance: The vendor inherited the work from his great aunt, whose husband was a secretary to William Fox.
