Description: Programme booklet for an event, the proceeds of which were in aid of the Auckland Military Sports Association. The front cover illustrated by W R Lethbridge whose signature is at lower left, shows a New Zealand flag, the figure of Britannia wearing a winged helmet, and a beefeater standing behind her. Native berries and oak leaves are shown at left and the whole is within an ornate border of leaves. Events listed inside included a pageant of people dressed as: (Army) Crusaders, longbowmen, archers, cannoniers, pikemen, halberdiers, yeomen of the guard, marines, Roundheads, Cavaliers, guardsmen; (Navy) Alfred & men, Men of the Cinque Ports, King Harry and men 1415, Drake and men 1572, Frobiher and men 1567, Lord Collingwood and men, Nelson and men 1798, (Women) Britannia, Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Elizabeth, Joan of Arc. Their uniforms are described. The programme explains where all these performers were featured in pageants, dances, musical events. Attribution: The work was formerly attributed to William Fox by Hamish Keith in the 1970s, but was reattributed to McCleverty by Roger Blackley in the 1990s on stylistic grounds. Provenance: The vendor inherited the work from his great aunt, whose husband was a secretary to William Fox.
