Description: Satire of the medical profession. Heads of fifteen doctors (or quacks) holding cane-heads and pictured within a coat of arms. The canes, like the wigs, marked the doctors' gentlemanly status, their silver tops often carrying salt and scents to ofset infections. Description: A commentary on the institutions of universities and of `higher learning'. Here a professor (thought to be William Fisher, Registrar of Oxford) is delivering one of his lectures entitled `Datur Vacuum'. Surrounding him are his students who exhibit a myriad of responses to the lecture. Indifference, boredom, scorn, amazement, skepticism, incredulity and drowiness are all portrayed.
