Description

Folder comprises a six page typescript memoir entitled "A few experiences and impressions while a P.O.W. under the Nipponese." Falconer was Chief Engineer Officer aboard the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand vessel 'Hauraki' when it was captured by the Japanese in 1942. Memoir recounts the various prisoner of war camps he was interned in within Japan. Falconer details the living conditions and the beatings received by men in these camps. Also a one page typescript article on Dunkirk in parenthesis, author unknown. The date of creation of the two documents is unknown. The memoir was written after Falconer was liberated in 1945. The memoir mentions 'Hauraki' passengers, including "Thomson" who is presumably R L Thomson, who was Second Engineer. Memoir mentions other vessels including 'Shropshire', 'Tokyo Maru' and the American Naval Hospital Ship 'Rescue'.

William Falconer was a prisoner of war under the Japanese from 1942-1945.

Provenance: Donated by Mr M Dyer, Tuakau, September 2016. Manuscripts have been passed down to the donor by his grandparents who were friends of W C Falconer.
