A view of of the ships HMS 'Achilles' and HMS 'Leith', anchored in Wellington Harbour. Probably painted from above Thorndon, through a group of trees. St Gerard's church and monastery can be seen on the hill opposite, above Oriental Bay.
HMS 'Achilles' saw service at the Battle of the River Plate in 1939, being instrumental in the defeat of the German battleship 'Admiral Graf Spee'.
The paiting has two old labels attached to the back, which state 'Oil colour / Title: Achilles & Leith, Wellington 1938 / Artist: F.V. Ellis A.R.C.A. / Price: £15. 15. 0.
