Ellis, Frederick Vincent, 1892-1961

Artist; taught art at Wellington Technical College. Lived at 50 Burnham Street Wellington (Wises Post Office Directory, 1941). See also 'The school that Riley built' by N. Harrison (Wellington 1961) and 'From Riley to Royal' (Wellington, 1986). Exhibited with the NZAFA 1925-1957. Born in England; trained at Halifax Technical College School of Fine Art, passing with distinction. Attended Royal College of Art where he was taught by Professor Robert Anning-Bell. He also gained a scholarship to study art in Italy. Arrived in New Zealand for his health in 1922, after being gassed in France during World War I. Came to Dunedin under the La Trobe scheme, taught at Dunedin Technical School of Art until 1925, then to Wellington, where he taught for 28 years. Also worked for the Railway Studios (his etching of the ferry "Maori" appeared in the the "New Zealand Railways magazine" 1 Sep 1927). Worked in oils, watercolours and etching. Was a calligrapher and designed leadlight windows. Died of lung cancer, aged 69, in Wellington. (Biographical information from his son, Frederick Ellis of Stratford, October 2011)

This scene is likely to have been on the farm of the artist's father-in-law, thought to have been in Otago. The four states of this etching are arranged and housed from lighest to darkest. Description: The exterior of the church from in front of the General Assembly building and the north end of Parliament, looking towards the west entrance of the cathedral showing it as it was proposed in the late 1930s and early 1940s by architect Cecil Wood. A number of details differ from the Cathedral's final appearance, particularly the top of the tower. The front entrance faces Molesworth Street, rather than Hill Street According to the artist's son, Frederick Ellis jnr, this view was drawn as a response to local authorities to envisage how the proposed cathedral would fit into the landscape. St John holds a book and a quill, and above him is an eagle with a halo, symbolising John's soaring gospel. Christ in the middle holds a shepherd's crook and a lamb, and is surrounded by sheep. The heraldic 'lamb and flag' emblem above his head shows the lamb supporting a staff bearing a banner charged with the St George's cross. On the right, St Andrew has the white saltire against the blue background above his head, symbolising his martyrdom and indicating the flag of Scotland.
