Description

Engraving, 'Australien Taf[el] 1' [Australia plate 1], from Emil Wendt, 'Bilder-Mappe für Länder- und Völkerkunde mit Einschluss von Geschichte und Naturgeschichte'. Leipzig: Carl Friedrich Dörffling, 1846. This was printed by Ed. Heynemann, in Halle, Germany.

The central image with the caption 'Ein Pa (befestigtes Dorf) und der Egmontsberg auf Eaheinomauwe', depicts Mount Taranaki and a fortified pa on a rocky promontory. This is based on an illustration with the caption “Mount Egmont, from near the Waimate Pah, Taranake”, in Volume 1 of Ernest Dieffenbach, ‘Travels in New Zealand’. London: John Murry, 1843: facing page 131. The original plate in Dieffenbach was lithographed by L Haghe of Day & Haghe - "Lithographers to the Queen". The image is based on a sketch by Charles Heaphy.

The central image is framed by 10 smaller illustrations with the following captions:

"Tabuch-Tempel"

"Känguruh-Tanz der Neuholländer."

"Neuseeländischer Wohnung." [New Zealand residence]

"Malaye. Hawaischer Krieger. Neuseeländer. Ew. v. Tonga." [... New Zealander ...]

"Lt. Dillon auf einer der Fidschi-Inseln überfallen (1813)"

"Das Känguruh."

"Der Haifisch."

"Der Austr. Apteryx. Das Schnabelthier." [The Australasian Apteryx - Kiwi. The Platypus]

"Empfang eines Missionars auf Erromanga."

"Papua. Ew. v. Van Diemens-Land. Papua v. N. Guinea. Ew. v. Neu-Holland."
