The original rough typescript copy of the letterpress for the 1943 publication 'The Songs of the Morning' by Captain James Gerard Doorly. Corrections and additions to the text are made by hand in ink and appear throughout.
The text comprises a commentary by Doorly written circa 1943, and the songs written by Doorly and John D. Morrison between 1901-1904 onboard the ship 'Morning'. Some lyrics were written by other officers, including Ernest Shackleton. Includes the introduction by R.H. Croll, dated 1 January 1943.
The typescript copy is annotated with a message, dated 2 July 1945, written in the hand of Doorly and addressed to an unknown recipient.

The 'Morning' was the relief ship to Captain Scott's expedition of 1902-1904. The ship carried a piano which was used to compose and perform the songs written by third officer Gerald Doorly (music) and Chief Engineer John D. Morrison (lyrics). Doorly resided in Melbourne circa 1930s-1940s, and was a member of the Bread and Cheese Club, Melbourne, which published Doorly's 'The Songs of the "Morning" in 1943.
