Description: Frozen spray at Cape Evans, Antarctica, caused by a severe blizzard lasting several days, which caused spray from the waves lashing the ice cliffs to feeze as it fell, forming furrows and ridges of ice. Photographed by Herbert George Ponting circa 1910 or 1911. This image is a glass copy negative made by Albert Percy Godber from an unidentified publication which has the inscription "Furrows of frozen spray. Herbert G. Ponting". Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom centre - Furrows of frozen spray. After a severe blizzard from the south, which lasted some days, a great part of the coast line at Cape Evans was thickly covered with furrows and ridges of ice caused by the spray from the waves which lashed against the ice cliffs freezing as it fell into this formation. Description: Collection comprises scrapbooks, newspaper cuttings, certificates, ephemera and photographs relating to Nolan's career as an Able Seaman in the New Zealand Navy. A large percent of the items detail the 1955-1958 Trans-Antartic Expedition and the New Zealand Ross Sea Support team, led by Sir Edmund Hillary. Also includes some family related material including telegrams and newspaper articles relating to Ann Nolan. Source of title - Supplied by Library Nolan joined the Navy at fifteen years of age. His first placement was aboard the `HMNZS Tamaki'. He served aboard three other vessels before joining the advance party flown to England to serve aboard the `HMNZS Endeavour', supply ship for the Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1956.
