Description

Electronic scans of black and white photographs showing scenes of people and goods taken on city streets, in shops, and on city buses in Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, and unspecified locations. Taken between 1966 and 1975 by Max Oettli.

Images taken in Auckland show: two men walking past the Matahorua and Tainui anchor sculptures beside the Post Office in the Bledisloe building, Wellesley Street West; people walking past brick warehouses on Coburg street and Coburg Lane [Kitchener Street?]; pedestrians on a crossing, Symond Street; teenage girls at an escalator in a department store; scenes on Queen Street featuring people and dogs; an old factory; snack bar table condiments; a greengrocer shop window, an art nouveau shop verandah and Coca-cola signage, Ponsonby; men beside the shop window of 'HA Scott & Co Ltd Shipchandlers'; a short woman on Victoria Street; a Maori man wearing an army overcoat on Vulcan Lane; shelves in Auckland University Library; and people on city buses. Includes an image of Max Oettli taking a photograph while in a florist shop with Liz Graham.

Images taken in named locations outsdie Auckland show: the Cuba Mall bucket fountain, a reflection of the photographer Max Oettli in the shop window of Dick Lee & Co, Chinese herbalists, Tory Street, Wellington (scanned image has file name 'Chinese restaurant, Wellington, 1975); a jogger on a Dunedin street; children playing at the pools at Waignaro Hot Springs, Ngaruawahia; Maori men playing pool in a pool hall, Rotorua.

Images taken in unspecified locations show: man at bust stop next to newspaper headline display '300,000 hippies in muddy chaos', a Chinese woman with 1960s make-up and bouffant hairstyle getting into a car, two Maori men on motorcycles (bikies) and old man outside the courts, 1960s style Polynesian girls in a milk bar, guests taking photographs at a wedding, women crowded around a 'Sportmaster' shirt sale table, and a hairdresser at work in a wig shop.

Files names were assigned by Max Oettli.

Arrangement: Files were delivered to the Library within a folder titled 'NZ 1967-75 2013 series' and subfolder 'street'
