Interview with Frank Fitzgerald, born in 1916, who joined the Tararua Tramping Club in 1934. He was also interviewed in 2000 for an earlier Tararua Tramping Club oral history project (OHInt-0501-01). Talks about tramping in the Orongorongos in the early 1930s with three three friends, crossing the Rimutaka range in 1933, meeting swaggers in the Wairarapa, and crossing the Tararuas to Otaki Forks. Mentions tramping on tracks to the Wellington south coast when they could not afford the fare to Days Bay. Recalls meeting early mountaineers in huts in the Tararuas. Mentions that bush tracks became overgrown during the 1939-1945 war and later required regular working parties to keep them clear. Refers to work maintaining club huts and bridging before there were helicopters to carry in materials. Recalls tramping trips in the Kaikoura Mountains and Nelson hinterland. Describes a three day tramp in the South Island from Klondyke Corner to Hokitika when it rained for 96 hours. Talks about a trekking trip in the Himalayas. Comments that the glee club was a feature of the Tramping Club during the prewar years. Refers to meeting his wife Betty through the Club and later going on tramps with their daughters. Comments on the food eaten on tramping trips. Talks about his involvement in search and rescue. Reflects on his 70 year membership of the Club and skills he learnt from senior members.
Interview with Beryl Wood, born in Palmerston North in 1927, who was also interviewed in 2000 for an earlier Tararua Tramping Club oral history project (OHInt-0501-06). Comments on the equipment trampers used in the 1940s and 1950s. Talks about memorable tramps in the South Island mountains, recalling her first trip up the Routeburn, over the Harris Saddle to the Hollyford and then to the valley of the Forgotten River. Refers to helping build Club huts in the Tararuas. Mentions being involved with the Club's glee club. Reflects on the decline of bird life in the Orongorongos over the years.
